Strategic thinking is the continual assessment of the future for business application and potential.  Here are some stories you can use.

  • Be able to detail a strategic plan and how you aligned the department objectives to meet the plan goals.
  • Describe new and emerging technologies and how the organization would benefit from adopting the concepts.
  • Detail your vision 5 years in the future.
  • Give examples on how you stay abreast of emerging trends.

I received a call from an individual who was meeting the CEO of the company as a last step in the hiring process.  He did his research and found out that the man had a driving, dominant personality.  The caller asked me to describe this individual.  The High D or dominant personality is confident, direct, loves challenge and change.  He or she is willing to take charge and go for the action.  These people do not wait  for things to happen…they make things happen.  Driver personalities are often aggressive, self motivated, goal oriented and fast moving.  They have often been described as “I want it, when I want it, and I want it now.”
Good negotiating skills depend on your ability to ask smart questions and listen carefully to the answers.  Listen between the lines! A negotiators success depends on constantly reading his counterpart. In other words, it is a chess game…all mental.  You do more listening than talking.  Big talkers, think they can intimidate people in to backing down.  The more and the louder I talk…I will win.  Not true.  This type of person is a poor negotiator.  Skilled negotiating means giving away as little as possible up front.  Your first step in negotiation is research. Find out as much about your counterpart as possible. Ask questions.  Negotiating has three phases:  Preparation, Opening it up, Discussion and Compromise.

The most important thing to remember is that the interviewer’s job is to learn more about you and, more specifically, why you are best suited for the job above all the other potential employees. Bearing this in mind, when he or she asks you the “tell me about yourself” question which many interviewees dread, it is important to realize that the question actually being asked is: Tell me about you and how you are the best candidate for the job.  Tell me what makes you different than everyone else.  What you are selling is your brand.  Today when we hire someone we want to know about the technical skills and the cultural skills.  Technical skills (hard) can be taught; Cultural skills (soft) come from within the candidate. Tell me about yourself covers both.  I want a well rounded picture of you.
