Two ways to separate yourself from the competition are

(1)  Be able to communicate what you want to do.  Employers don't want to hear a title.  They want you to describe it by functions.  a positive is that we remember functions and activities.  Why... we can visualize them.

(2)  Be able to communicate how your skills and abilities are transferable to my company or industry.

If you are working, don’t use your company business card for networking. That’s tacky.  Have a personal ID card.  Your contact information should be at the bottom, your name in the middle with three functions under your name. In the left hand corner should be your tag line or brand. Your brand should peak curiosity…it is what separates you from the competition.

Always have a list of core competencies in your resume.  When you customize your resume for a particular job, you can interchange the core competencies to match the job. People ask me all the time about having multiple resumes.  They also say I don’t have the time to rewrite my resume for every job.

Here is a tip:  Don’t rewrite the entire resume.  Make three changes:  Objective, profile, and core competencies.
Resumes … how to write a perfect resume?  There is no perfect resume.  It is the one that portrays you in the best light and makes you the best candidate for the job. Today, resumes are elimination tools, not a hiring tool.  It is a piece of paper, it has no personality, can’t talk or answer any questions.  It is loaded with elimination information. Because employers are getting an avalanche of resumes, they use the resume to eliminate you. With a 30 second scan, I am sure I will find a few things I don’t like and I can move on to the next one.
