Soft skills refer to a group of personal qualities, attitudes, and traits.  Today, soft skills are just as important as hard or technical skills. Some examples of soft skills are tenacity, positive attitude, production management, communication, problem solving, flexibility, and my favorite… energy.

Great question and a great way to open the conversation.  Unfortunately, candidates do not take advantage of this statement to get the edge on the competition.  This is the time for you to shine.  Start by telling the interviewer what makes you different from everyone else.  Be able to give some brief short comparisons between you and what they are looking for.  Also, be able to tell the Interviewer what excites you about the opportunity.  In other words, what you can bring to the position regarding hard and soft skills and what you want to learn and experience in this role.  Use your “T chart."

If you are taking other people with you because you are afraid to go alone, let me give you both sides of the story.  Yes, it is all right to take someone with you, but you will limit your chances of people approaching you. Moving around the room by yourself encourages people to approach you and initiate conversation.  Also you can walk up and begin a conversation with another person who is standing alone.  Here is a tip:  Stand next to a group of people and within seconds, a person will turn and talk to you.  If you smile and make a comment or answer a question, the individual will introduce you to the rest of the group.

Question of the week…

What is a “Blessing or Endorsement” interview?

I am sure everyone has had a blessing or endorsement interview.  It is usually the highest level individual above the Hiring Manager.  It could be the President.  Before you leave and he ends the interview, you can say “I am very interested in this job and I know your endorsement is the key to my receiving an offer.  May I have your endorsement?  Phrased this way, the question does not request that the interviewer offer a job, but merely the endorsement.  It also flatters the interviewer.  Recommendation carries considerable weight.
