Today we are going to talk about some success stories and questions I received during the week. 


First of all let’s talk about some success stories.  I worked Sunday afternoon  from 3-7 PM.  I was excited to do it.  Four clients called me on Friday and said that they received calls from employers and they all had face to face interviews on Monday.  What is interesting there was a common denominator. All the interviews were a result of phone screens 30-60 days ago. One candidate was told the job was on hold, another that there was a hiring freeze and one never heard anything or got a response to his calls.

What excited me was it was a good sign. What it was saying was that companies are doing their budgets as usual and planning for additional manpower. One employer told a client we were going to call a laid off employee back, but decided to hire someone from outside the company. All four wanted to make sure they were prepared for the questions so we role played and I gave them tips and techniques.

The most difficult question is “what are your salary requirements”.  The reason it is difficult is that if you give the wrong number, the interview is over.  We have one rule when it comes to money.  He who speaks first… loses. When companies ask the question, they are trying to screen you out.  I teach people how to defer or counter the question. 

Here are a couple of suggestions:


“I am sure ABC company pays what is competitive in the market place so I know salary won’t be an issue.  By the way, now that you brought it up what is your range for this position?”

“Even though salary is important, what is more important is the position. I will be happy to discuss my compensation requirements when we have decided that I am the right person for the job.”
