Listening or talking?

The last couple of shows we have talked about how important listening is in networking, interviewing, salary negotiation… etc.  Let’s talk about listening.

Listening is one of the most important and least refined communication skills.  It is the first step to understanding another person’s wisdom, perspective and feelings.  To become a great listener practice connecting totally with the person who is speaking.  Let everything else go and focus fully on what is being communicated.

Whether you are making a career change, taking your career to the next level or starting a business, everyone wishes they had more time.

Let’s look at time:  Time is uncontrollable, can’t be stretched, can’t be stopped, can’t be extended and it keeps on ticking.  Therefore, time management is a myth.  Time management is actually self management.  The skills we need to manage others are the same skills we need to manage ourselves.  The ability to plan, direct, delegate, organize and control.

So the end result is we are not managing time, we are managing productivity or how we use our time.  Why do some people get more done in less time?  They work smarter…not harder.

This is a question we received, but I am sure there a lot of people who are unemployed and feel the same way. This question was picked by the show team for a free coaching session.  Here is the question...

“I am depressed, frustrated but above all scared.  I try to keep a good attitude, but everyday is the same.  I don’t get responses, I can’t get through on the phone, I meet people, but they don’t want to talk to me.  Some days, I just sit in front of my computer.  What do I need to do?"

My response… For 9% of the nation’s population the job search is really getting challenging.  The competition is getting stiffer, people are getting frustrated and fear is getting stronger.  A little fear is good because it keeps moving you forward.  A lot of fear is paralyzing.  The strongest weapon you have to fight fear, self-doubt and self-limiting beliefs is your attitude. Maybe it’s time for an attitude adjustment!

People like to be around high energy, fun and positive people.  When it comes to attitude…Positive attracts positive…Negative attracts negative.

A Chinese philosopher said, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step." For change to occur in your life you must take the first step. Take one step at a time. Don't worry what is ahead of you, only on the step you are taking at this moment. The hardest step is that first one. You can accomplish anything if you do it one step at a time. What are you waiting for? Take that first step now!

Allow for some flexibility and 'unknowns' in your transition plan. Things can and will come up that you did not anticipate and over which you have little or no control. Family members get sick, your car breaks down, other major or minor disasters can happen, and some days you might suffer a crisis of faith in yourself. Expect the unexpected! Resistance and denial will only cause you to suffer and will create more stress, and can even de-rail your plan altogether. Acceptance and surrender to what IS will help you move forward more quickly.
